Summer’s Best Soup and Drink Pairings

What’s a meal without the perfect drink? The right beverage can compliment, and even enhance, your favorite parts of a dish. We found the perfect beverage pairings for all of our summer soups.

Coconut Corn Chowder

Complement the sweet, gentle spice of our Coconut Corn Chowder with the citrusy heat of a Spicy Paloma cocktail (read our recipe below.) Or, for something a little more straightforward, grab your favorite summer beer, like a lager or pilsner, for a flavor-enhancing contrast.

Some Options We Like:Citrus-forward cocktails, Narragansett Lager, Peak Summer Session Ale

Gazpacho

Chilled, refreshing gazpacho is often considered a drink unto itself. But if you’re not sipping it solo, finding the right beverage for the chilled tomato-forward soup can be tricky. We’ve found that a dry vinho verde or a crisp Basque cider like Berrika can cut through and enhance the fresh tomato flavor with their gentle effervescence.

Some Options We Like: Bodegas Zudugarai 'Antxiola' Txakoli Vinho Verde, Berrika Basque Cider

Summer Harvest Soup

To underscore the fresh, vegetable-packed profile of our Summer Harvest Soup, a balanced, un-oaked chardonnay is a timeless match. Or for something a little bubbly, the natural effervescence of a chilled Pét-Nat makes a refreshing and pleasantly funky pairing.

Some Options We Like: Bacchus Chardonnay, Alexander Koppitsch “Pretty Nats” Pét-Nat 2019, Marrioti Smarazen Pét-Nat, Le Sot De L’Ange “La Boutanche” Pet Nat NV

Make It Yourself: The Spicy Paloma

2 oz Silver or Blanco Tequila
1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
½ Teaspoon Agave Nectar or Simple Syrup
1 Thinly Sliced Jalapeño
2 oz Fresh Grapefruit Juice
1 ½ oz Club Soda

Run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass. Roll the edge of the glass in sea salt. Fill the glass with ice. In a cocktail shaker, muddle lime juice, agave nectar, and one or two small slices of pepper depending on how much heat you want. Fill the shaker with ice. Add grapefruit juice and tequila. Shake until thoroughly filled. Strain into glass and top with club soda. Garnish with a small wedge of grapefruit.

There’s no time like fall for the wide variety of apples available. For this simple salad, we prefer apples with a bolder flavor, such as Fuji or Golden Delicious.
